Your fried had good advice with the nail polish, I've used touch-up paint The paint/polish will crack when there is separation on the 'skin' of the frame.. ' Their 'if it was my bike' stance was to keep riding it My buddy who worked for years at Trek says there is a very good chance it is just the paint that cracked, not the frame.. Otherwise I'll be stuck riding my MTN bike all the time Can't have that -- posted by lpollockSure you can.

I'm fairly confident the cracking you see is the overwrap coming unbonded This does NOT imply the glue joint is failing.. One crack is in the seat tube about 4 inches above the BB The other is in the seat stay about 3 inches below the joint with the seat tube.. I would say don't worry until the hairline crack begins to show a gap you can snag a nail or piece of paper on; then it's time to hang the bike up.. I think I will keep riding it for now and just closely monitor what the cracks look like.. The cracks started at the bottom of the adjustment slot in the back side of the tube.. The two good clues youv'e given are the locations of the cracks and the fact that they travel the circumfrance of the tubes.. When the frame sections are joined, they receive a glue in the joint & an overwrap to reinforce the joint.. A trick he learned from Trek mechanics was to put a bit of finger nail polish over the crack and see what happened to it.. The over wrap can act like a coat of paint, coming loose at the edge and possibly, gradually loosening up deeper over time.. The Head tube, down tube, BB and chainstays see the greatest amount of stress Second would be the seat tube just below the junction of the top tube & seatstays.. I've obviously been riding it in this state for who knows how long Everyone assures me that carbon will not have a catostrophic failure but it's not their rear end on the line..
